ENCODING FOR VIMEO + UPLOADING

VIMEO EXPORT/UPLOAD:

In compressor, I usually get the best results just exporting it with the following folder structure/settings:

If you need it smaller still, do the H.264 LAN Streaming (“Streaming” –> “Web” –> “QuickTime 7 compatible”).

Or if you want to get crazy technical and have the highest res you can get, follow VIMEO’s steps for uploading things to their site.

Here’s a guide from VIMEO for uploading your file to their site. There is a video at the right explaining how to do so from Final Cut Pro. I’m also outlining the steps below, but you can follow that if you need a visual guide):

Finish editing your video. Once complete, make sure you have no additional files sitting on your timeline that are not part of your video (so that what you export is EXACTLY the length of your film or animation project).
From the FCP file menu, select “Export Using QuickTime Conversion.”
When the menu comes up, give your export a title (I’d recommend “movie_name_small”
Then at the bottom where it says “Format: QuickTime Movie,” click “Options.”
First, UN-CLICK “Prepare for Internet Streaming.“
You won’t need that.
Then, under Video, click Settings:
Compression Rate: H.264
Current fps (most likely this will be 24 fps for all of you)
All the rest is fine as is except for clicking on “Restrict Data Rate.” Click that and put 5000 inside the box (kbits/second).
Then click OK at bottom right.
Click “Size.”
For Vimeo, you’ll want 1280×720 (assuming you’re using HD, which you all are).
Then click “Sound”
Choose “AAC”
Enter in 44.1 kHz (rather than 48)
Select 320kbps for the data rate.
Let it export (this may take a while).
Sign up for a vimeo account, if you don’t already have one.
Upload to vimeo, and link to it from your blog!

EXPORTING YOUR STOP-MOTION PROJECT for me (to put on a DVD):

Because these are short pieces, you’ll want to do a full-res export. We’ll load all the projects onto the main drive at the front (at the instructor’s station), so that you can play them full-resolution.
To do so, just export directly from FCP: “Export” –> “Quicktime Movie” and if it’s not HD (this will depend on the timeline you’re in), you’ll export at one of the Apple Pro Res settings.
You’ll also want to upload one version for VIMEO using the steps above, so that you can have it linked from your blog.
Make sure you export sound and video, if you’re using both.
